Home Depot, Lowes, We have a love/hate relationship

Do these look like the people greeting you at the door to help you find everything you need? Or is it the sweet retired engineer whose greatest joy is enabling other folks to be properly equipped? This has not been our experience despite what their commercials mislead you to believe. But we do love those stores, why? Because right from the moment you walk in you want to do it yourself, make something, create. You think you are walking in to get some light bulbs and walk out with a plan to re landscape (or at the very least) plant some flowers. Who knew you needed indoor plant feeder or shade grass fertilizer, they did. However, we can not seem to finish a "simple" home project without at least five trips to the dang store.
When we purchased a house that was nearly 100 years old and boarded up we knew it was going to require some work. Now Tom is definitely a handy man but for the sake of our marriage, sanity and time we were able to get a wonderful contractor who essentially gutted our home and made it move in ready. We have had no issues with any of that work, but in order to save some money and have some fun stuff to do ourselves we have been chipping away at the "little" things. Our girls have become so used to going to home depot that when mommy says, "man i am so ready for the weekend!" Ellie closely follows with, "are we going to home depot?" And to the stores marketing credit you can find Dora on just about anything from paint swatches to little potty inserts. Plus the girls often request "shakers." Yes, shakers are boxes of nails or screws, but desperate times....
We love walking into that store and feeling like we can accomplish any home task but often fall short of leaving with every possible solution. We sit down make a long list and that list seems to exist every weekend. We have been known to leave the list at home and rally to remember what it was we really needed in the first place. We have definitely left the store without the one thing we needed and seem to confuse what brands Lowe's carries versus home depot. All in all we are so blessed with a roof over our heads, and the exhaustive joy of home ownership, even when we hear, "mommy it's raining in our house!"

I too love the depot, but home improvements are great proof that the economic concepts of specialization and comparative advantage are alive and well. May you find your inner Bob Vila this weekend.

we have to do lowes, but only b/c it's based here in NC and we feel guilty if we go to the HD... but seriously, I'm sick of home projects. Now is when I want lots of $$$ to hire someone :). Pete does love "goin to see da twactos" though...
