What I'm Reading...

Over the past year I have become a sort of book worm. I have always read for school or work and have discovered the joys of the public library! I usually have a few books going at a time depending on my mood, particular interest and time. Most of the time I am reading one fiction, one non-fiction and one for curiosity's sake. So this past summer I powered through the teen cult classic Twilight Saga. I seriously felt silly but I could not put the books down. I read over a 1,000 pages in two weeks. I realized I had never read any Jane Austen books and felt like they were sort of the same. As Tom puts it, "a whole lot of staring." What is not to love about that! The language takes a few pages to get used to, however 50 pages in and I am excited to find more time to read this book.
This book on prayer is being read by our Mom's Group at church. We are reading it along with a Tim Keller Study on the book of Psalms. This has been one of the best books on prayer I have ever read. Miller speaks from personal experience as well as a rich knowledge of the God's word. He writes about getting to know God, rather than "experiencing" God and that the praying life is not an accomplishment rather a journey of a lifetime. I am nearly done with this book and I do not feel like a failure or that I have to add something else to my list of things to do, however my desire to commune with God in the chaos that is quality and is more organic.

Speaking of organic... About three years ago I read the book Fast Food Nation. This book was about the food industry, specifically the meat packing and the corn crop. It was the same year that Tom and I had our first plot in a community garden! The combination began a sort of near obsession within me in regards to what exactly we are putting into our bodies. I have read several well known books on this topic as well as watched a few documentaries. I find it fascinating how "progress" in one sense can at times create many other unforeseen problems down the road. Anyway.... I will limit my soapbox and passion and just say it is worth looking into for yourself. I noticed Alicia Silverstone's book in our New book section of the library and could not help but check it out. She is passionate about her reasons for going vegan but I found her information very interesting and leaving me sorta wanting to make vegan food. Not for political, religious or diet reasons but the again the overall idea of putting clean food in your body makes sense. I could not help but read it hearing her talk like Cher from Clueless but once you get past that it is a very interesting read.

"That's my mom, Isn't she a betty? She died in a fluke routine liposuction. Daddy's a litigator. Those are the scariest types of lawyers. Even Lucy our maid is scared of him."

I am a friend of Neals and have been following your blog as I loved hearing about your adoption. What a beautiful story. I have passed it on to many friends as they are walking through similar journeys. I have a book to recommend that I am reading right now. It is the rave at the moment but so far I can understand why. It is called The Help. Hope you enjoy!
